The Mural Design Process
First, contact me, and we’ll set up a time to chat on the phone about your project. I’ll ask questions about your space, wall texture, size, location, and any design ideas you have for your project. From there, I’ll provide a cost estimate.
If you’re ready to move forward, I’ll send a mural design agreement to sign and an invoice for the initial deposit. For murals, I typically request 50% of the total cost upfront to secure your dates on my calendar and purchase supplies. The remaining 50% is due upon mural completion. Afterward, I’ll plan a time to visit your space in person to discuss initial design ideas.
For clients unsure of what images they want, I’ll create a Pinterest board with images based on the ideas we discussed. I’ll share the board with you so you can choose which images and ideas resonate most. You’re welcome to add additional images to the board as well.
I’ll work with you to refine these ideas into an initial design concept. From there, I’ll create a digital mockup of the mural design in Photoshop or Procreate and overlay it onto an image of your wall so you can visualize it in your space. We’ll refine the design until you’re fully satisfied and provide final approval.
Once the mural design is approved, we’ll schedule a start date for painting.
The Mural Painting Process
I’ll coordinate with your schedule to determine the best days and times for painting. The time required to complete a mural depends on its size, complexity, and your availability. Most murals are completed within 1–2 weeks.
Before painting, I’ll prepare the area by laying down drop cloths and plastic sheeting, and taping all trim and edges to ensure the surrounding space stays clean and paint-free. If necessary, I’ll apply primer or a base coat of paint first. Next, I’ll sketch the design on the wall using pencil or chalk, often with a projector or grid to ensure accurate proportions.
For murals, I prefer using Behr Premium acrylic paint, which is durable, scuff and stain-resistant, and resistant to UV fading. Once the mural is complete, I can apply a clear, weatherproof polyurethane coat for added protection if desired.
